Brompton Carpet Cleaning Health and Safety Policy
Brompton Carpet Cleaning is committed to maintaining the highest standards of health, safety, and welfare for our customers, employees, contractors, and members of the public. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety risks in all carpet, upholstery, rug, and hard floor cleaning work carried out in homes, offices, and commercial premises across our service area.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our primary objectives are to prevent injury and ill health, protect property, and minimise disruption for clients. We aim to achieve this by identifying hazards, controlling risks, using safe cleaning methods and products, and ensuring all staff are trained and supervised appropriately.
Legal Responsibilities and Management
Brompton Carpet Cleaning will comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry standards relating to professional cleaning services. Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with company management, who ensure that suitable policies, procedures, and resources are in place.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for implementing this policy on site, while every employee is required to take reasonable care of their own safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before starting any cleaning task, our operatives assess the working environment and the methods and products required. This includes identifying trip hazards, electrical risks, restricted access, ventilation issues, and the presence of vulnerable people such as children, older adults, or pets.
We develop and follow method statements for our most common services, including carpet cleaning, upholstery cleaning, stain removal, and hard floor maintenance. These method statements cover the correct use of machinery, dilution and application of cleaning solutions, and safe handling of waste and contaminated materials.
Safe Use of Equipment and Machinery
All equipment used by Brompton Carpet Cleaning, including extraction machines, buffers, vacuums, and hand tools, is maintained in good working order and inspected regularly. Faulty equipment is removed from service immediately.
Only trained staff are permitted to operate machinery. Cables are routed carefully to reduce trip hazards, and equipment is never left unattended in a way that could endanger clients or visitors. Electrical equipment is used in line with manufacturer instructions and not operated where there is a significant risk of contact with water unless specifically designed for that purpose.
Chemical Safety and Cleaning Products
We select cleaning products with care, favouring those that are effective, safe when used correctly, and appropriate for professional carpet and upholstery cleaning. Safety data information for all products used is retained and made available to staff.
Our team members are trained to follow product instructions, including correct dilution rates, contact times, and ventilation requirements. Chemicals are never decanted into unlabelled containers, and products are stored securely when in vehicles and on client premises to prevent accidental access by children or pets.
Personal Protective Equipment
Where necessary, Brompton Carpet Cleaning provides appropriate personal protective equipment such as gloves, masks, eye protection, and protective footwear. Staff are instructed in when and how to use this equipment, and in how to dispose of single-use items safely.
Operatives are expected to use personal protective equipment whenever a risk assessment indicates it is necessary, especially when dealing with strong cleaning agents, heavy machinery, or contaminated materials.
Client and Public Safety on Site
We take reasonable steps to protect clients, visitors, and members of the public while work is in progress. Where appropriate, warning signs are placed to highlight wet floors, trailing cables, or restricted areas. We ask clients to keep children and pets away from work areas and equipment until cleaning is complete and surfaces are safe to walk on.
We ensure that exits, escape routes, and access for emergency services are kept clear throughout our work. At the end of each visit, all equipment, detergents, and waste are removed from site or stored safely as agreed with the client.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Our staff receive guidance on safe lifting techniques for moving machines, hoses, and furniture. Where practical, team members work together when lifting heavy items or rearranging furniture during carpet and upholstery cleaning.
We aim to reduce the risk of strain and injury by planning jobs sensibly, using suitable equipment, and avoiding unnecessary manual handling.
Training, Information, and Supervision
Brompton Carpet Cleaning provides induction and ongoing training covering safe cleaning techniques, product use, equipment operation, manual handling, and emergency procedures. New employees work under supervision until they demonstrate understanding and competence.
Health and safety information is communicated clearly to staff, and we encourage team members to report any hazards, near misses, or concerns so that we can respond promptly and improve our procedures.
Accidents, Incidents, and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, however minor, must be reported to management and recorded. Where necessary, we will carry out an investigation to identify root causes and introduce measures to prevent recurrence.
Our operatives are instructed in basic emergency actions, including how to respond to slips and falls, exposure to chemicals, electrical incidents, and fire. First aid provisions are kept in company vehicles or on site as appropriate to the nature of the work.
Health and Safety in Client Properties
We respect that we are often working within clients homes and workplaces. Our team members are expected to behave professionally, maintain good housekeeping standards, and leave areas clean and tidy after work is completed.
We take care to minimise noise, disruption, and odours, and to ensure that surfaces and carpets are left safe to walk on as soon as reasonably possible after cleaning. Where drying times are required, our staff advise clients clearly.
Continuous Improvement and Policy Review
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly to reflect changes in legislation, industry practice, and the services we provide. We use feedback from clients and staff to refine our methods and to maintain safe, reliable cleaning services throughout the areas we serve.
Brompton Carpet Cleaning expects all employees and contractors to cooperate fully with this policy and to contribute actively to a safe and healthy working environment for everyone.
